Mazda to Launch Three New 2010 Models in China

Japanese carmaker Mazda will debut three new models in 2010 in China, as part of the company's attempt to expand its product in the country and increase the local market share. Together with its local partner FAW, Mazda will introduce the sports version of the Mazda6, Mazda8 (MPV) plus the CX7, each of them to be produced at the local plants through the joint venture formed by the two.

According to China Car Times, the Japanese manufacturer will continue to offer both the new and the current Mazda6 as the company intends to keep the old model especially for buyers who are looking to purchase a budget luxury model.

On the other hand, the Mazda6 sports sedan will be offered in limited numbers, but Mazda hopes to increase its share in the premium sports sedan market. The car will compete with Honda Spirra and Toyota Reiz, the source mentioned.

Mazda also announced plans to bring the Mazda2 in the United States starting in 2010. The car will be sold in the US only as a five-door model and will be offered with a slightly reworked design in the country - minor modifications to the front fascia are very likely. It is based on the same platform as Ford Fiesta, which will also go on sale in the country next year.

The small hatchback is offered with several gasoline and diesel configurations in Europe, but sources are hinting that the Japanese manufacturer will debut a single gasoline-powered 1.5-liter four-cylinder unit in the United States. The European powerplant releases 103 hp and 101 lb-ft of torque, helping the car to accelerate from 0 to 62 in 10.4 seconds.
