Mazda’s brand new SKYACTIV-G tech has started earning awards already, as the 1.3-liter petrol engine has received the 2012 ‘Technology of the Year’ award presented annually by the Automotive Researchers’ and Journalists Conference of Japan (RJC) and its chairman, Hiroshi Fukunaga.
The SKYACTIV-G 1.3 has significantly less internal friction and delivers more torque with better fuel economy and lower emissions. Its first application is in the little Mazda2, but its technology is also seen in the larger 2-litre SKYACTIV-G that’s being shown on the CX-5 compact SUV.
To deal with the problems created by the high 14.0:1 compression ratio, the 1.3-liter features a number of new technologies, such as special piston cavities that are designed to support ideal combustion, and special multi-hole injectors that enable better control of injecting fuel into the cylinders.
