With Mazda having introduced the stunning RX-Vision and Vision Coupe concepts, it seemed pretty clear that the Japanese carmaker would deliver a successor to the RX-8. However, Mazda CEO recently made it clear that while the company is dreaming of offering such a halo car, it won't land too soon, due to the ever-increasing eco pressure.

Well, here's a thought, one that swept the Internet off its feet last month, circulating as a rumor: what if Mazda separated the Wankel engine and its sportscars, so the reliability, emissions and efficiency drawbacks of the first doesn't continue to hold the latter back?

Sure, the assets of a rotary engine are amazing, from weight and packaging to that brap-brap. But Maza can only bring the SkyActiv-R rotary engine to the market as a range extender for exo-friendly models. So while the path mentioned above would obviously trigger purists, it would at least allow for the losses to be cut.

As such, we could end up with a rival for the opinion-splitting Toyota Supra and who wouldn't want that?

Tech aspects aside, I've brought along a rendering that portrays the expected RX-9. However, this skips past the RX-8, looking like a modern-day FD RX-7 instead, as you'll be able to notice in the social media posts at the bottom of the page.

The said styling pathway is only natural when you consider that Jon Leu, the artist behind it, has an RX-7 in his garage. And, spare time efforts aside, I should mention that his designer's work experience includes brands like Audi, Volkswagen and Hyundai.

Oh, and if the pixel master's name sounds familiar, it could be thanks to the fact that you've consumed the eye candy that is his R36 Nissan GT-R rendering. This features the same sort of old-school influence, since the gear head also happens to own an R32 Skyline GT-R. In fact, you'll be able to see the two creations together in the third Insta post below.
