Mazda’s SKYACTIV program is a fresh and different approach to the problem of making cars greener. While other manufacturers are investing in hybrids and EVs, Mazda has taken a different path and they are improving propulsion systems already in use, without any drastic modifications to how the systems work.
With the success of the SKYACTIV-engined CX-5 now becoming obvious, Mazda have now decided to double the production of these engines from the current figure of 400,000 to 800,000 units per year. The SKYACTIV-D and SKYACTIV-G engines are currently manufactured in Mazda’s Hiroshima engine plant which will require some serious investment and possible retooling, in order to reach the desired production figures.
The Japanese automaker wants to sell roughly 1.7-million units globally, by the end of the 2016 fiscal year (March 2016), and by the same year, SKYACTIV-engined vehicles will account for around 80% of their total sales figures.
