Mazda Koeru Concept Prototype Spied, Could Be a Coupe-ified CX-5 – Photo Gallery

It's no secret that Mazda has a habit of presenting concept vehicles, then turn them into production vehicles with little visual modifications from the original design. What the peeps from 16888.com spied here could become the coupe-ified spin-off of the mid-size Mazda CX-5 in about two years time.

Compared to the 2017 Mazda CX-9 spied in July, there are notable differences between it and the prototype featured in the following photo gallery, including the rear quarter windows, front grille design, and length. From the blurry and somewhat pixelated spy photos provided by the Chinese carparazzi, this test mule appears to be just about the same length as the Koeru concept. Speaking of the Koeru, its 2,700 mm wheelbase mirrors the CX-5 crossover's.

This detail should cement our bet on this becoming the rumored Mazda CX-6 (or CX-4 according to some reports). The Mazda Koeru concept vehicle presented at Frankfurt is 4,600 mm long, 1,900 mm wide, and 1,500 mm tall. Compare those numbers with the CX-5's (4,555 x 1,840 x 1,670 mm) and it all adds up to our presumption – the CX-5-based crossover coupe will most likely rival the likes of the BMW X4 and so forth.

Mind you, this prototype appears to wear more conventional lights and it's taller than the Koeru concept for more headroom. Of course, the concept's 21-inch wheels are nowhere to be seen on this prototype either. An interesting detail regarding this camouflaged test mule is that the infotainment display sits on top of the dashboard instead of being integrated into the dash like it's on the 2016 Mazda CX-5 crossover. Furthermore, the gauges mirror the styling of those adorning the Mazda3 compact hatchback.

Whatever Mazda has in store for us with this mysterious test mule, one thing is certain – the CX-3 will have a bigger, more coupe-ish brother, and it has the makings of a new commercial hit for the Japanese brand.
