Mazda Gets EPA Recognition: Most Fuel-Efficient Brand, for the Third Time

You'll never guess what's the most fuel-efficient manufacturer! Unless you guessed "Mazda." In which case, congratulations! You've just won a Miata plushie! Not really, so don't be emailing us about getting your stuffed toy.
For the third year in a row, the US Environmental Protection Agency has named Mazda the most fuel-efficient automaker in the United States. According to the EPA's latest report, Mazda has the highest fleet-wide adjusted fuel economy - 29.4 MPG, and the lowest CO2 emissions: 328.

The funny (or curious) thing about Mazda being the most fuel-efficient car company in the US is that the Japanese brand doesn't even have any hybrid or electric models in its range to help bring down the fleet average. Meaning that the SKYACTIV technology is the only one responsible for Mazda's achievement.

SKYACTIV can be found in Mazda3, Mazda6, CX-5 and in the new MX-5 Miata and CX-3. The latter was rated by the EPA at 29 mpg city / 35 mpg highway when it comes to fuel economy, the best in the subcompact crossover segment.

Expect never to hear the end of this EPA recognition from Mazda's marketing department. Since the brand has also been named by US News and World Report as the 2016 Best Car Brand, we can look forward to countless ads and press releases trumpeting the low fuel consumption of the brand's models. In fact, they've already started.

"This achievement verifies that Mazda has evolved to offer what others can’t, vehicles that are of high-quality, great looking, fun-to-drive and fuel efficient,"
said Jim O'Sullivan, CEO of Mazda North American Operations.

We can't blame him for rubbing it in competitors' noses. At least, O'Sullivan was enough of a gentleman not to mention Volkswagen. We're not so sure we could've gone through a report containing the words "EPA" and "low emissions" without taking another stab at the wounded deer of the automotive industry.
