It used to be that ABS was something your rich cousin who works in a bank had on his new Mercedes, but now, even ESP is being introduced as a standard feature. So if you want your cars to be the first pick of customers interested in safety, you’ve got to step it up a notch.
Mazda has announced a brand new system for the CX-5 that helps prevent collisions at slower speeds. The system you see in action in the video provided by the Japanese automaker is called the Smart City Brake Support (SCBS). This operates at speeds of between 4 and 30 km/h (3 to 19 mph).
It uses a sensor underneath the rear view mirror mount, on the upper part of the windshields, to detect any obstacle in front of the vehicle and automatically reduces the brake rotor travel. This means that braking will be almost instantaneous. And if the driver does not act, the system reduces the engine revs to slow you down. The system also has something called Acceleration Control that will not allow you to rev the engine if you accidentally press the accelerator pedal instead of the brake.
