Mazda engineers are reportedly campaigning for the revival of rear-wheel drive models, claiming it will help the Japanese automaker to better differentiate itself against other manufacturers.
According to Edmunds, engineers within the company want Mazda to design more rear-wheel drive Miata and RX-inspired vehicles instead of focusing on front-wheel drive models, such as the 2014 Mazda 6. However, the report says Mazda’s top management would rather stay away from RWD in order to avoid investing in brand new architectures for its current models.
Mazda discontinued the RX Series in 2011, when Wankel-engined RX-8 production at the Hiroshima plant ended. On the other hand, the third-generation MX-5 Miata is still in production, while a fourth-generation model is being jointly-developed with Italian manufacturer Alfa Romeo for 2015.
