The world of engines is rapidly changing, as Toyota is shifting some of its efforts from hybrids to diesels, while US consumers begin to take a liking to the diesel fuel that they hated for so long. Now, the long-rumored arrival of diesel-powered Mazdas in the US has been confirmed by a company official speaking to CarandDriver.
“It’ll be here between 15 and 18 months behind the launch of the Skyactiv-G gasoline engine in the Mazda 3,” says Mazda spokesperson Jeremy Barnes.
This means that a Skyactiv oil-burner could be on your dealer lot in early to mid 2013.
The diesel model in question might be the CX-5 2.2-liter turbo with 150 hp and a grunty 380 Nm (280 lb-ft) in standard spec. The European and Japanese market also offers a 175 hp and 420 Nm (309.7 lb-ft) version. Other Mazdas, like the 3 and 6, are also likely to follow.
