As difficult as it was to take our eyes of the RT24-P prototype racer adorning Mazda's Los Angeles Auto Show booth, the 2017 CX-5 introduced at the event also delivered enough visual kicks to be worthy of standing next to the racer. But what about an MPS version of the high-riding Mazda?
While the Japanese automaker hasn't announced anything on the matter, we're here to bring you a rendering that gives us a pretty good idea of how such a crossover would look like.

Coming from digital artist X-Tomi, the pixel rearangemment takes an already appealing crossover and turns into a head-turner, at least for people who know that driving racecars on the road won't cater to all your transportation needs.

For now, the 2017 Mazda CX-5 engine range is comprised of naturally aspirated 2.0 and 2.5-liter four-cylinder units. The rumor mill also talks about the US market borrowing the brilliant Skyactiv-D 2.2-liter oil burner offered in Europe.

As for what could power a potential go-fast incarnation of the new CX-5, the MPS badge would go well with the turbocharged 2.5-liter unit animating the 2016 Mazda CX-9.

In its current form, the unit delivers 250 hp  and 310 lb-ft of twist. The Japanese engineers noticed that most drivers pursue superior fuel efficiency and therefore don't usually take their engines past 3,000 rpm. As such, the carmaker decided to prioritize efforts that minimize turbo lag instead of going for meatier maximum output numbers.

For one thing, the 2.5-liter unit features a Dynamic Pressure Turbo, which sees the turbocharger being fed with air using two channels. At low rpms, the second one is closed, while the first one, which has a narrow profile that aims to increase pressure, makes sure the boost is built as quickly as possible. The separation line sits at 1,700 rpm, while maximum torque arrives at 2,000 rpm.

Nevertheless, if Mazda ever decides to give in to its upmarket urges and gift us with a CX-5 MPS, the engine could receive a different tune, reaching out to high-horsepower fans among you.

UPDATE:WIth the latest talk on Mazda bringing its MPS/Mazdaspeed (North American market designation) performance arm back from its current hibernation state, the CX-9 seems like the ideal candidate for such a move. Oh, and it wouldn't hurt to see the automaker introducing a global nameplate for its potential go-fast vehicles, following the Ford Performance model, for example.
