Mazda CX-5 Crashes During Automatic Braking Dealer Test in Japan

The autonomous braking systems fitted to modern cars are not there so that you can read a newspaper and not have to use the braking pedal any more, they are there as an extra safety feature, a net that's not 100% free of loopholes.
But Mazda dealers in Japan had such confidence in their "Smart City Safety" system installed on the CX-5 that they routinely put their reputation on the line, deliberately driving toward a big foam block on customer test drives.

Yesterday, things went terribly badly, as a CX-5 crashed, according to media sources quoting the Saitama Prefectural Police, which is investigating the accident. The customer, who was behind the wheel of the crossover, suffered neck injuries, while the dealership salesman in the passenger seat broke his arm. How fast were they going?
