Mazda Confirms Separation from Ford

Seeking, as it says, to increase global manufacturing efficiencies, Japanese automaker Mazda officially confirmed a soon-to-be divorce from its US partner, Ford, by saying that the production of the next midsize car for the North American market will not take place in the US, but in Japan.

For now, the Japanese will continue to focus on the production of the Mazda6 in the US, at the AutoAlliance International (AAI) in Michigan, but rumor is this too will end soon. According to sources, the production of Mazda vehicles in the US will cease in 2013. (The Mazda6 is also manufactured in Hofu, Japan, and Changchun, China).

"The decision was made after carefully assessing all risks and opportunities, including global needs, changing demand in North America, and exchange rate exposure. Going forward, Mazda will strive to maintain and grow our business in America," said Takashi Yamanouchi, Mazda CEO.

"The decision to relocate to Hofu and consolidate the production of the next CD-car makes the most sense for our business."

As for what was a 30-year alliance on the US market with Ford, Mazda says the relationship will end with no hard feelings. The Japanese are not saying goodbye to the US altogether, and plan to be open to any good business suggestions.

“We are committed to working with Ford, our joint venture partner in AAI, to identify potential future opportunities for the plant. Mazda and Ford have enjoyed a close relationship for over 30 years. We have collaborated on projects where there are mutual benefits, and both companies remain committed to continuing this strategic partnership," added Yamanouchi.
