Mazda Celebrates MX-5 with Open Race

Passing through the twenty year mark since the model was originally launched, Mazda organized the “MX-5 Open Race” to honor the roadster. The four-hour endurance competition gave drivers from most European countries the opportunity to experience the MX-5 on the race track. The event took place at the Adria International Raceway in Northeast Italy, one of Europe’s newest racing circuits.

Last year, to properly mark the 20 years anniversary, Mazda cooperated with European MX-5 clubs to bring a total of 200 MX-5s from all over Europe at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in June. Another similar event followed in October, when over 1,600 roadsters and about 2,600 owners and fans of the sports car gathered at an event held in Japan.

The Japanese carmaker also recently confirmed it will introduce the 20th Anniversary edition Mazda MX-5 at the 2010
Geneva Motor Show in March. The special edition roadster will be produced in a limited run of just 2,000 units and will only be available in Europe.

The version to have its world premiere at the aforementioned show is based on the same 1.8-liter soft top production roadster model, only that it benefits from a special exterior styling package.

The Miata/MX-5 made its arrival on February 10, 1989 at the Chicago Auto Show as a fresh roadster, which sold globally for nearly 10 years, becoming one of the most successful Mazdas ever produced. The model also entered the Guinness Book of World Records with more than 850,000 units sold to date.
