Starting January 11th, the 2019 Tokyo Auto Salon is the place where Mazda will display no less than four highlights. The one to watch is the MX-5 Miata concept boasting a detachable hardtop made from carbon fiber.
As the name implies, the concept car is nothing but a styling exercise. It remains to be seen if the accessories catalog for the MX-5 Miata will someday include the carbon-fiber hardtop, a decision that will be made following the public’s feedback at the Tokyo Auto Salon.

Officially titled Mazda Roadster Drop-Head Coupe Concept, the one-off sports car is furthered by LED turn signals, 16-inch forged wheels from RAYS, more aggressive side skirts and front lip spoiler, plus a pair of tow hooks. An upgraded air filter and limited-slip differential promise superior handling whereas the Recaro seats and aluminum pedals bring the point home.

The second highlight that needs discussing is the Mazda3 Custom Style. Based on the all-new generation with torsion-beam suspension at the rear, the Custom Style flaunts gloss-black trim and a body kit that promises better aerodynamic qualities than the bone-stock specification.

Two more Custom Style models will be presented in the guise of the CX-5 compact crossover and CX-8 seven-seat crossover, and as opposed to the Mazda3 hatchback, their body kits are far more subtle. The 20-inch aluminum wheels of the CX-8 spell trouble in terms of ride comfort, which is a big no-no in a family-hauling vehicle when you think about it.

The CX-5, meanwhile, stands out from the crowd with illuminated scuff plates, aluminum pedals, and floor mats with “deodorizing function.” Also confirmed at the Mazda stand in Tokyo are two MX-5 Cup racing cars, developed by Mazda Motorsports.

If you were wondering, the MX-5 Cup is available in the U.S. in turnkey flavor from $58,900. All the customer has to do is “just add in the race seat that fits best.” The Global MX-5 Cup provides a $200k scholarship to the series-winning driver and $75k for the one crowned rookie of the year.
