Mazda Announces 2011 NYIAS Goodies

The North American division of Mazda announced today it will bring its suite of SKYACTIV technologies at the upcoming New York International Auto Show later this month, alongside the North American debut of its Minagi Concept and the United States debut of its refreshed 2012 Mazda3.

As a fresh reminder, SKYACTIV includes completely redesigned, highly efficient, internal combustion gasoline and diesel engines, manual and automatic transmissions, and an advanced body and chassis.

“Together, these components will improve upon every aspect of the driving experience, including the vehicle's performance, handling, fuel economy and safety,” the company explains in a statement for the press.

The first application of Mazda's new SKYACTIV-G gasoline engine combined with SKYACTIV transmissions will debut in the 2012 Mazda3 later this fall. “Nearly one of every three Mazdas sold worldwide is a Mazda3, which, refreshed for 2012, receives the SKYACTIV powertrain as well as a refined interior and exterior design and new safety features,” Mazda further added.

The automaker says the engine in the 2012 Mazda3 is a direct-injection 2.0-liter four-cylinder that will deliver a 15 percent improvement in fuel economy, while the transmission adds another four to seven percent.

Finally, the Minagi compact SUV concept debuted at this year’s Geneva Auto Show last month. This is the first Mazda concept vehicle to fully adopt its new SKYACTIV suite of technologies and its new KODO ("Soul of Motion") design theme, which was initially seen in the Shinari Concept that debuted last year. ”Combining Mazda's latest technology and design elements, MINAGI provides direction for the brand's next generation of vehicles, and is the inspiration for an upcoming production model,” Mazda explains.
