Rumors surrounding a potential Mazda 6 2.2-liter diesel engine circulated on the web since a long time ago, so today's news only comes as a confirmation that Mazda is also interested in low emissions and low fuel consumption. In fact, these are the main attributes of the new Mazda 6 engine, according to a press statement of the Japanese carmaker, with reduced CO2 emissions but improved fuel economy on most versions.

And because we were talking about versions, Mazda rolled out three different variants of the new engine in order to better suit any of the buyers' needs.

1. 2.2-liter High Power – this engine develops a maximum power of 185 PS at 3,500 rpm and 400 Nm of torque at 3,000 rpm with an average fuel consumption of 5.6 liters for sedans and hatchbacks and 5.7 liters for wagons per 100 km. It emits CO2 of 149 g/km (sedan and hatchback) and 152 g/km (wagon), according to the same press statement.

2. 2.2-liter Mid Power – less power with slightly improved fuel economy: the engine develops 163 PS at 3,500 rpm and a torque of 360 Nm at 3,000 rpm. The fuel consumption is now rated at 5.5 liters (sedans and hatchbacks) and 5.6 liters (wagons) of fuel per 100 km.

3. 2.2-liter Low Power: a maximum power of 125 PS at 3,500 rpm and 310 Nm of torque at 2,600 rpm; fuel consumption of 5.5 liters (sedans and hatchbacks) and 5.6 liters (wagons) of fuel per 100 km.

The upgraded models now include a new rear vehicle monitoring system which analyzes the rear side of the car and warns the driver of approaching obstacles. The new system is based on two 24 GHz microwave sensors installed on the left and on the right side of the rear bumper in order to be capable of monitoring 100 percent of the rear side of the car.

The safety was enhanced with ABS, EBD, brake assist, traction control system and dynamic stability control (all of them available as standard) plus daytime running lights, Bi-xenon headlamps, tyre pressure monitoring system and parking sensors available as options.
