Mayfield Failed Drug Test for Meth

NASCAR driver Jeremy Mayfield has presumably tested positive for methamphetamine during a random drug test conducted by the championship officials at the Richmond International Raceway (RIR). The information was revealed by ESPN The Magazine and confirmed by Sporting News during the course of yesterday evening.

This is the first clue about Mayfield's suspension that surfaced the media in recent days, as the initial news concerning his penalty did not include the reason why NASCAR had proceeded to it. As a reminder, Mayfield was suspended by the championship officials on May 9th, for failing a drug test.

Although the driver initially argued that he had failed the test because of the mixed drugs for which he was prescribed for allergies – Adderall-XR and Claritin-D – a third test at Richmond again turned positive. The urine test revealed traces of a third drug, whose identity was not disclosed by either the NASCAR officials or Mayfield's lawyers.

The reason for this turn of events was set by the Mecklenburg Count Superior Court in North Carolina, whose judges issued a gag on the aforementioned information. This makes the ESPN The Magazine revealing non-official, therefore still contested by Mayfield.

His lawyers are still arguing that it was probably poor testing procedures that led to the positive result in drug testing, or that the third substance – believed to be methamphetamine, but, again, not yet official – is a result of the first two prescribed drugs mixing together.

With the situation yet to be clarified, NASCAR did not change its stand on the matter, accusing him “of willfully violating its substance-abuse policy, breach of contract and fraud,” as reported by Sporting News.
