Mayfield Cleared for Racing thanks to US Court

Jeremy Mayfield may return to racing from as early as the Daytona race this weekend. Following a US court lifting his drug abuse suspension earlier this week, the Sprint Cup Series had no choice but to allow Mayfield to race this weekend. However, that doesn't mean the war between the two parties will end here.

Although Mayfield's arguments concerning his testing positive for methamphetamine in a random drug test at Richmond (in May) were accepted by the US court, NASCAR still believes their procedures were conducted in fair manner and will continue to fight Mayfield's right to race in the weeks to come.

After testing positive, Mayfield argued that the results of the A sample test were influenced by a combination of prescribed medicine and over-the-counter drugs. In addition, the driver's lawyer insisted the North American racing series' officials did not follow by-the-book procedures when testing Mayfield, contesting the results via several specialists.

Until the situation is sorted out for good, Mayfield is allowed to race at Daytona. That is if he can get himself in shape in due time, as the first practice sessions for this weekend's Sprint Cup race are scheduled for later today. Several members of his team were laid off in the last couple of months, following Mayfield's suspension.

I'm happy I can go back racing and just glad the justice system works like it does and just thank God. It might be a little late for this weekend, but we'll see what happens. I'm able to race, that's the main thing. I think so now. I have to go back and see where we stand on that and where they are,” said Mayfield.

The main thing is to be able to go back and be able to do that. The truth came out, and now I can go back and say we're clear of all this. I cleared my name, and now we can go racing again. That means more to me than anything,” added the driver.
