Max Mosley Afraid to Lose F1 Job?

After he characterized many of the Formula One Teams Association (FOTA) representatives as “loonies” for trying to cause a split from the FIA, Max Molsey tried to soften his jibe during last weekend's British Grand Prix. Present in the Silverstone paddock on Sunday, the FIA president insisted the only problems he has with the teams' representatives are F1-related, and not based on personal agendas.

He argued that, while in a good relationship with all the FOTA members on a personal level – and he didn't held back at complementing Flavio Briatore or Luca di Montezemolo – his strong opposition is with their ideas for the future of the sport.

It's more of a jokey reference than anything else. I don't think they are literally loonies, but I think they are a little bit immoderate in their approach,” said Mosley for the British media, referring to his “loonies” jibe earlier last week.

Montezemolo and I have known each other nearly 40 years and I get along with him fine on a personal level. Flavio is great on a personal level but obviously sometimes when you have got something as complex as formula one, you can have disagreements about how things operate within the sport. But on a personal basis we've always got along fine,” added the FIA president.

Why the sudden change of stance towards the teams? While some believe it is simply a gesture of common sense – as someone needs to make the first step towards reconciliation – other rumors suggest Mosley is on the verge of being expelled by FIA's World Motor Sport Council this Wednesday.

The WMSC is scheduled for a meeting in Paris in the midweek (June 24), and Mosley is presumably facing a negative vote from the board's members. Therefore, as the story goes, he is now trying to restore a decent relationship with the Formula One teams, in order to show the WMSC he is still on top of the situation.

In addition, the FIA president will reportedly drop his legal threat over Ferrari and the FOTA.
