Max Biaggi Buys the Only Ducati 1199 Panigale S Senna Available in Europe

If you’re not living in Brazil, getting a Ducati 1199 Panigale S Senna special edition was almost impossible. Now, clawing such a bike in any European market is completely impossible, as the only bike which was for sale has just been bought by motorcycling legend Max Biaggi.

Part of a charitable action, Sotheby’s organized an auction for the limited Ducati 1199 Panigale S Senna, and Biaggi had had a fierce battle with the Formula 1 driver Felipe Massa, who finally yielded. Not only was this bike the only one available in Europe, but it was also the first in a numbered series of 161 units, making it all the more a coveted item. The multiple GP and WSBK champion forked out €37,000 ($50,425) for the Ducati 1199 Panigale S Senna and said that he will not ride this machine, but have it displayed as a true work of art and homage to the great Ayrton Senna.

Ducati has manufactured 161 1199 Panigale S Senna units to pay tribute to Senna’s heritage and his 161 races in Formula 1. The remaining 160 units will be sold in Brazil, and proceedings will go to the Senna Foundation and aid its education projects. A 6-time World Champion, Max Biaggi will receive his Ducati 1199 Panigale S Senna on July 17th in a gala organized by the Senna Foundation and which will be held at the Salle des Etoiles in Monaco.

This year marks the 20th commemoration of Ayton Senna’s death, which occurred on May 1 during the San Marino GP, when Senna went off the track and hit a concrete wall at almost full speed. After his death, which was recorded as a national tragedy, the Brazilian authorities declared three days of national mourning, with an estimated three million mourners filling the streets of his native town Sao Paulo.

Below you can see footage from Senna’s crash in 1994. And if you favor Harleys more than Ducati machines, here's a DP Customs Senna Triubute bike.
