Mat Watson in BMW M340i Loses Drag Races to Girlfriend in Mercedes-AMG A45 S

Are your Christmas dinner conversations a little bit boring? Well, those of Carwow presenter Mat Watson probably aren't, because he's been drag racing against his mother and girlfriend. This week, they got behind the wheel of three wildly different performance cars, namely the BMW M340i, the Alfa Romeo Stelvio QV, and the Mercedes-AMG A45 S.

Races like these have revealed just how easy it is to go fast in 2020, as Mat Watson keeps losing, despite this essentially being his job. About a week ago, his mom surprised everybody by winning in a plucky little Volkswagen T-Roc R crossover against the might of Porsche and Mercedes-AMG.

In terms of power, misses Watson is now in the strongest car, as the twin-turbo 2.9-liter V6 in the exotic Italian SUV makes 503 hp and 442 lb-ft of torque (510 PS and 600 Nm). Meanwhile, Mat is in the underdog, the M340i wagon with a single-turbo inline-6. The European model is slightly down on power compared to the one in the U.S., plus the wagon body is heavier than its sedan counterpart.

And finally, the yellow hyper hatch is occupied by Jo, Mat's girlfriend. Its engine is a 2.0-liter turbo, the same as the CLA 45 and GLA 45. However, because it's an S model (not offered in America), the output goes up to 415 horsepower (421 PS).

Unlike the last time, mom has trouble launching her car, the Alfa Stelvio Quadrifoglio, so she loses all the races. It's amazing to see the BMW M340i, which costs way less money, getting ahead. But the output gap between the two is over 130 horsepower, so we have trouble believing this outcome. The rolling race actually puts the Bimmer last, which is natural when you consider the output gap.

However, we don't have any difficulties believing that the A45 S is faster than the M340i. Mercedes-AMG spent a lot of time and money developing the best hatchback with a four-cylinder engine. Too bad it sounds like an asthmatic vacuum cleaner.
