“Told you” is by far the best way to start this piece, as the suspicions I had at the beginning of April turned out to be true: massive protests from French motorcycle riders have been organized in France, grouping all sorts of riders against the dumb lower speed laws.
Even though the news initially surfaced on April 1st and I suspected that this might be some prank, it turns out that the French authorities were dead-serious when proposed that the speed limit for motorcycles on secondary roads be dropped from 90 km/h (56 mph) to 80 km/h (49 mph). Oh, and if you’re riding a two-wheeler under 125cc.
Protests have been staged in all France, with drivers often joining the riders, and even the cops applauding the initiative. Just like on many other occasions, tens of thousands of riders and members of the FFMC (Federation Francaise des Motards en Colere or the French Federation of Angry Motorcyclists) rode slowly and obeyed the law, paralyzing the traffic in the respective areas, including the capital Paris.
More such actions are planned for the future, until the French authorities understand how stupid the law project is, French sources say. Even though the officials say the law is supposed to curb motorcycle fatalities (read the previous article for more), the vast majority of the protesters are convinced that the state is only trying to bring in more money in the bucket with the fees which would doubtlessly abound after the 1st of January, in case the law passes.
