According to New York Times, ABC News and more media, Harley-Davidson will soon make an official recall targeting certain model year 2014 motorcycles for a very serious front brake issue. No recall info was posted with the NHTSA at the moment of writing, so we cannot provide you with the number of the recall campaign, but more detailed info is expected to surface really soon.
The mentioned sources report that at least 66,421 motorcycles may develop problems with their front brake system. 2014 model year Touring and CVO Touring motorcycles manufactured between June 1, 2013 and May 7, 2014 are targeted by this recall. In these motorbikes, the front line may be pinched between the fuel tank and the frame.

In such an eventuality, the pressure inside the front brake can increase, potentially causing the front wheel to lock, and increasing dramatically the risk of a crash. The sources say that Harley-Davidson had learned about 5 crashes and two minor injuries related to this issue. The technical problem was detected last fall by means of warranty claims. The MoCo is said to notify all the customers later this month and will schedule the repairs. Authorized dealers will replaced the brake lines for free and strap them in place to prevent future problems.

Again and again, such low-level recalls keep on popping up with very expensive motorcycles, machinery which should be free from such defects, by whichever standard we’d be judging. Honestly, getting a $25,000 bike, crashing and sustaining injuries because such a stupid reason looks like the shortest way to a very nasty lawsuit. Brakes, transmission and suspensions are probably the “holy trinity” which should be free from defect with any motorcycle, let alone manufacturers with such a history and such price tags…
