Massive Chrysler Recall Announced

American manufacturer Chrysler is about to embark on a sizeable recall of its vehicles, due to problems discovered in the Dodge Grand Caravan, Chrysler Town & Country and Jeep Wrangler. According to initial figures, an estimated 600,000 vehicles will be recalled in the following months.

According to the carmaker's postings on the NHTSA website, the problems and number of vehicles to be recalled are as follows.

In the US, Chrysler will recall 284,831 Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town & Country minivans, manufactured in 2008 and 2009, due to a wiring issue that can lead to a fire inside the sliding doors. According to the findings, an improperly routed wire harness can allow the lower sliding door hinge bracket to make contact and wear through the wire insulation, increasing the risk of a fire.

An extra 288,968 Jeep Wranglers, manufactured in between 2006 and 2010, will be sent back to service because of a potential brake fluid leak. The front inner fender liners on the vehicles may rub against the brake fluid tubes may cause a leak, which in turn may result in the loss of braking power.

Additionally, 76,430 Jeep Wranglers and 34,143 minivans are being called back in Canada and Mexico for the same problems.

So far, neither Chrysler nor the NHTSA have any knowledge of any incident relating to the recalls. Chrysler will notify owners, with the safety recall expected to begin this month. The company’s dealers will fix the involved vehicles free of charge.
