Massa Wants Testing Champions, Shorter F1 Races

Massa seems to have returned from Brazil full of new exciting ideas. The Ferrari driver revealed some of his own thoughts on how the Formula One Teams Association (FOTA) and FIA could make the sport better in the years to come.

Making the testing sessions throughout the off-season more attractive for the sponsors is one way to boost the image of Formula 1. Having some time to kill at Jerez – as he was replaced by teammate Kimi Raikkonen in the Ferrari F60 cockpit for the remaining 2 days of the Spanish test – Massa argued that testing sessions should come with a stake.

That would lead to testing world champions – drivers and constructors – which will in turn make the track meetings more exciting. Given the proper format, testing could really provide a show boost, attracting a lot of F1 fans to the racetrack.

“We could do two, three or four (test) sessions during the season – not together but separately – and make a 'testing championship' and the winner could take a bonus for the (world) championship. Maybe we could have a nice practice in the morning and a big qualifying(-style session) in the afternoon,” said Massa.

Earlier this week, the Brazilian suggested that races in F1 should be shortened in order to concentrate all the show in less mileage. He argued that, most of the times, nothing happens in the last 10 or 15 laps of the race – we beg to differ, however, given the sole example of the 2008 Brazilian Grand Prix.

The FOTA met yesterday to discuss new ways of reducing costs in Formula 1, as well as improve the show for the fans. And we're pretty sure Massa wanted to be part of it. Luckily for us, he's not the one pulling the strings!
