Massa Insists He Doesn't Need Glasses to Drive F1 Car

Felipe Massa insisted that he doesn't need glasses to race Formula One cars. We know that his eyesight has been a topic of conversation ever since the piece of metal from Rubens Barrichello's car hit his helmet during the qualifying session of the Hungarian Grand Prix. But recent information from his medical staff showed us that his sight was back to normal by the end of last year.

However, in recent weeks, the 28-year-old was spotted wearing glasses at night, when driving his own car, despite the fact that his eyesight returned to 20-20 (officially). And Massa did not deny it, but insisted that this measure was taken only to take care of his eyesight for the future.

No, I just have a little bit of myopia (short-sightedness), so I just wear them when I'm driving in the evening and when I'm watching a movie. I prefer to read better what's written on the screen. Usually for racing, also at night, it's OK,” said the Brazilian driver during a video chat on Ferrari's official website.

Massa missed the second part of last season after going through a near-death experience during the Hungarian Grand Prix. The head injuries he picked up at the time put him in the hospital bed for a couple of weeks (he was actually induced into a coma at some point), and soon after he was released some worries appeared about his ability to see clearly (for racing).

Since then, he has competed in several karting events in his native Brazil, and returned to testing with Ferrari for the entire off-season period this winter. He did no less than 8 days of testing with the F10 this February, all of which went great. His lap times were in the vicinity of his teammate Fernando Alonso's.
