Maserati will make plug-in hybrid cars in the coming years, the brand's President reveals.
The decision to introduce plug-in hybrid cars in the Maserati range is strictly linked to the need to meet average emissions targets. Since the new emission targets will have to be achieved by 2020, Maserati is expected to deliver the new models by then.
Except for the Alfieri sports coupe, all the cars in the Maserati range will have a plug-in hybrid version. The plug-in hybrid range from Maserati will include the Ghibli, Quattroporte, GranTurismo, GranCabrio, and the Levante SUV.
No word from the brand on mild-hybrid versions, but micro-hybrid variations are expected for the model versions that won't feature a full-hybrid setup. The micro-hybrid term refers to systems that reduce a car's fuel consumption by implementing the temporary shut-off of the alternator, along with a Start-Stop system, among other technical solutions.
Compared to a mild-hybrid system, the micro-hybrid solution is pretty common in the automotive industry. The significant difference between the two technical solutions is the fact that the micro-hybrid does not feature an electric motor to assist the internal combustion unit on propulsion.
In an interview with the Brits at Autocar, Maserati boss Harald Wester confirmed the development of a 48V electrical system, along with a plug-in hybrid drivetrain for the upcoming Ghibli PHEV. The plug-in hybrid version of the Ghibli is expected to have CO2 emissions of 70 grams/kilometer in the standard European mixed cycle.
The Ghibli is currently the most affordable model in the Maserati range. The new plug-in hybrid version will come at an increased price, but it will be successful in some countries where such powertrains are favored on taxes. Therefore, the increased cost might be outweighed by government incentives in some countries, particularly in western Europe.
