Despite the fact that they’re applying the wonder-recipe that involves developing and selling an SUV in order to boost sales, Maserati won’t go further and invent a smaller model than the already-announced Levante.
The upcoming Maserati Levante stopped being a secret a long time ago, since spyshots and videos have been flooding the internet showing the Italian luxury SUV undergoing tests hiding behind a thick layer of camouflage.

We also know that the Levante will enter the automotive world at the 2016 Detroit Motor Show and could go on sale later in the year, but that’s as far as Maserati will go with its SUV affair. At least, for now.

According to Autocar, Maserati boss Harald Wester denied rumors of saying the Italians will come up with a rival for Porsche’s Macan SUV: “In this business, you should never say ‘no’ in a dogmatic way, but my personal opinion is that Maserati wouldn’t want to go below the Levante in size.”

So, Maserati is not planning a crossover that will go a slot under the upcoming Levante for a clear reason. That is because FCA’s Jeep brand is already covering that market area, not to mention that we should expect an Alfa Romeo SUV popping up in the near future, so there’s no point in overcrowding a range since there’s a high risk of sales cannibalism.

Those who are eager to see the Maserati Levante during NAIAS in January 2016 should expect an evolution from the Kubang prototype unveiled back in 2011 underpinned by the same platform as the Ghibli.
