Maserati Mulls Compact Crossover

After announcing that they would be launching a BMW 5-Series rival, in the form of the Ghibli sedan, as well as a full-size SUV, which is now expected to be called the Levante, Maserati is no reportedly considering the creation of a smaller SUV/crossover, about the same size as the upcoming Porsche Macan.

Maserati is trying to emulate the path taken by Porsche, which now sells a rather extensive range of products and makes a lot of money for VW, and a smaller SUV would make perfect sense, given the current economic situation of Europe, as well as many parts of the world where people simply don`t have the money to buy the top-spec luxury version of a car, and will have to settle for something smaller, cheaper and more efficient.

The new smaller SUV from Maserati would sit below the Levante in the range, yet it would not share its Jeep Grand Cherokee-derived platform, riding instead on the Compact U.S. Wide Platform, which will also be used in the next Jeep Liberty. The year it is expected to make its debut is 2016.

According to Car & Driver, if this smaller Maserati SUV does get built, it may replace the Alfa Romeo-branded SUV we had been hearing a lot about. However, we say this would be a mistake for the Fiat group CEO, Sergio Marchionne, to make, as an SUV bearing the Alfa badge would be a highly sought-after machine.
