Stirling Moss, one of the greatest men in motorsport, passed away earlier in April. He left behind an incredible racing career and a generation of drivers inspired by his exploits. All without the man ever having won a Formula 1 title.
Moss is one of the most successful drivers of the sport, but despite having come close several times – he raced for a total of 7 seasons, winning 16 races and finishing second four times and third three times – he never actually won an F1 title.
This, and the king without a crown moniker he was slapped with hasn’t stopped him from becoming an icon to look up to. His passing at the age of 90 leaves a void that will likely be impossible to fill – after all, Moss was a constant presence at various car shows and events around the world.
Now that enough time has passed since his death, tributes have begun appearing as means to forever write the Moss name in the history books. The latest is that of Maserati, one of the many carmakers touched by Moss’ magic over the years.
As most of you are aware, Maserati is currently working on a sportscar dubbed MC20, and as a means to recognize Moss’ contribution to the brand’s legacy, one of the MC20 prototypes will be called Stirling Moss from now on .
Sporting the man’s name on the back and sides, carefully included in the camouflage that still reveals a bit more lines than we've seen before, this special MC20 is meant to resemble the Maserati Eldorado Moss raced in Monza in 1958.
Also, says the carmaker, the moment of this announcement (May 13) was chosen to coincide with Moss’ win at the Monaco F1 Grand Prix in 1956, while driving a Maserati 250F.
“The choice of a prototype of the MC20 to dedicate to Sir Stirling is no coincidence: through this model, the Trident Brand aims to underline its sporting vocation, and above all return to a leading role on the racing circuits, after the latest world championship won in 2010 with another extraordinary car, the MC12,” the carmaker explains the reasons that led to the creation of the MC20 Stirling Moss prototype.
