Not since the Jaguar crossover hiding as a lifted XF have we seen such a disguise, but now it’s the Maserati Levante’s time to pull such tricks. The SUV was recently spied for the first time, with the mechanical bits of the vehicle being packed under the body of a Ghibli.
Maserati’s Australian imported has stated the Levante will be a special creature. The company explained that while for the Porsche Cayenne the bulk of the sales come from the base models, its car will aim higher than that. Still, Maserati will rely on the Levante to reach its 50,000 annual sales target, so you shouldn’t compare this to the Bentley SUV either.

The aforementioned statement is rather vague, but we believe this means the Italian SUV will either be gifted with more standard features than Porsche SUV, or it will be priced above the Cayenne.

Don’t let yourself tricked by the appearance though (by the way, we actually love such silhouettes), it is still unclear what paltform will be found under the car. So far, we’ve heard two versions - Maserati could stretch the limits of the Quattroporte chassis or it may borrow the Jeep Grand Cherokee’s architecture and adapt it (both carmakers are owned by Chrysler).

As for the engine compartment contents, the Levante will pack at least 3 engines, possibly in multiple states of tune for some of them. The petrol side of the range should be comprised of a twin-turbo V8 with 560 hp, as well as a twin-turbo V6 that could deliver 350 or 425 hp, depending on the version.

When it comes to the diesels, the possibilities include a V6 with three levels of power: 250, 275 and 340 hp.

While not all of the aforementioned units may make it to the Levante, the SUV will definitely have something for every power taste.

The Levante will roll off the assembly line at Maserati’s plant in Mirafiori, Northern Italy next year. Since Fiat is believed to have injected EUR 1 billion ($1.32 billion) into the project, we have big expectations for the SUV.
