The 2012 Beijing Auto Show was the last stop for the Maserati Kubang SUV Concept that was first shown last year in Frankfurt and has since been shown at a number of venues across the world.
The first reactions to the vehicle weren’t too positive, and even included accusations that it was a bit too “Audi Q7” at the back. But the world really can’t have too many luxury SUVs right now, and development is underway for the full production version.
While the concept used a platform borrowed from the Jeep Grand Cherokee, Maserati has promised us that the actual vehicle will be one of their bespoke creations featuring their own powertrains. However, production is unlikely to take place in Modena, and Detroit has been rumored as an option.
“After Beijing, we will retire the Kubang concept. Our SUV will reappear in its production form and with its final name in due time,” Maserati CEO Harald Wester said in an interview with Automotive News Europe.
