You can tell how cool a car company is by how many of its cars end up in racing games. By that measure, Maserati hasn't done anything amazing since the MC12 back in 2005, but we think the carmaker can still be saved with EVs and a little help from China.
The GranTurismo is perhaps the last real Maserati, a true sports car that doesn't try to copy what the German automakers are doing. It went out of production a few years ago, and although the Alfieri concept was supposed to preview a successor, that hasn't arrived yet.
Italian designer, Sergey Dvornytskyy has carefully outlined his own GT successor, which he calls the Maserati Genesi concept. We find it amusing that it's called the Genesi since the design is vaguely reminiscent of some of Genesis' concepts.
Most notably, the Genesis Essentia also had this disregard for where the hood ends and the windshield begins. The front of the Maserati design study presents an interesting modern twist on the famous Italian grille design. Instead of sucking air for the engine, it channels it for aerodynamic purposes.
The rear has an electric twist on a performance vehicle, sporting a real and quite massive diffuser. Everybody knows blue is the official color of electricity, and that's used as the accent for this silver body. If the windows are silver too, how's the driver going to see out? Well, like many designers, Sergey is interested in the concept of augmented reality.
The Genesi has full autonomy but can give the driver control, displaying information inside the cockpit. Even though this is a 2017 concept, it perfectly lines up with what Maserati has promised.
A couple of months ago, the Turin auto house made the following statement: "Production of the new Maserati GranTurismo and GranCabrio, the Brand's first cars to adopt 100% electric solutions, will commence in 2021. Maserati has decided to build the GranTurismo and GranCabrio at the Mirafiori production hub, with an investment of 800 million Euros."
