General Motors’ CEO, Mary Barra, was unanimously elected as the company’s new Chairman. She has been GM’s CEO since January 15, 2014.
Meanwhile, Theodore Solso, GM’s previous Chairman, will continue as the Board’s Lead Independent Director.
Thanks to her recent nominalization, Mary Barra strengthens her position as the most powerful woman in the automotive industry and one of the most powerful women in business. After all, she was nominated the most powerful woman in business in 2014 by Fortune Magazine.
Also in 2014, Mary Barra received the “Women of Achievement and Courage” Award from the Michigan Women’s Foundation. Back then, GM’s new CEO described the award as a “great personal honor,” and stated that she believes that “people across the spectrum are free to contribute and grow to their full potential when people are treated with equality and respect and when the barriers that usually prevent us from getting ahead are dismantled or torn down.”
In addition to that, Mary Barra was on the cover of Time magazine’s October 2014 issue. The same publication included her in the “Top 100 Most Influential People in the World” feature of April 2014 as well.
Barra has spent her entire career at General Motors and earned the title awarded by Fortune in part due to the sheer size and importance of the business she leads. Unfortunately for Mary Barra, GM’s hard times haven’t passed, as the company was forced to issue the largest recall in its entire history because of decisions made many years ago by employees who skimped out on parts that made up ignition switches.
GM’s CEO has a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering and graduated with an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business. She began her career at General Motors back in 1980, as a co-op student at the Pontiac division.
