In a video shoot for Red Bull in Dubai, 2011 DTM Champion Martin Tomczyk and rally ace Nasser Al-Attiyah swapped cars to see how the world of motorsport feels like from the other side. While Martin is used to smooth asphalt and mind-numbing speeds, Nasser is more accustomed to charging sand dunes in a torque monster.
Therefore, Tomczyk climbed into the MINI ALL4 Racing X-Raid car that won the Dakar Rally in the last four years and took to the dunes of Dubai. At the same time, Al-Attiyah traveled to Oschersleben in Germany to take the BMW M4 DTM Performance Parts car out for a spin during testing.
The result can be admired in the photo gallery and video posted below. If you ask us, they seem like they both had plenty of fun.
“Driving the MINI ALL4 Racing through the sand and over the dunes in Dubai was a fascinating experience and was so much fun,” said Tomczyk. “The car has an incredible amount of torque – and the test in the dunes was an amazing adrenalin rush even for an experienced race driver such as myself. It’s totally different to driving on a circuit.”
At the same time, Nasser declared himself impressed by how agile the M4 was and how much better the brakes felt. Of course, when you’re used to racing on sand, it’s quite normal to feel that way once you reach tarmac.
“I have contested a few races on asphalt throughout my career, but it has always been my dream to drive a DTM car. The BMW M4 DTM is fantastic. The aerodynamics are really noticeable in the turns in particular. There’s an incredible amount of grip. I was also impressed by the brakes of the DTM car,” said Al-Attiyah after the event.
