Marquez Tried to Put His Fractured Finger Back in Place Himself, But Understood It Was Serious

It is yet uncertain whether Marc Marquez will be fit enough to race at Jerez, but the doctors say that recovery procedures may have him in good condition for the Andalusian round. Motogp.com interviewed Dr. Xavier Mir who performed the surgery on Marquez' hand and seemed quite confident in his recovery.

It was, however, funny to learn from Dr. Mir what happened after Marquez crashed. He says that the little finger on Marc's hand was both fractured and dislocated badly, after a rider from behind ran over Marquez' hand, unable to avoid him.

Marquez tried to fix his dislocated finger but the "strange noises" convinced him not to

At first, Marquez thought his finger was only dislocated and wanted to put it back to its place. Dr. Mir smiles as he tells how Marquez wanted to pull his finger back to a normal position but heard strange noises and understood that paying a visit to the hospital was much wiser.

X-rays showed a fracture in the proximal phalanx, the finger bone closest to the hand. Surgery was performed, and a small titanium plate was used to keep the bone in place and the gap to a minimum. This, in turn, has helped to start recovery earlier than normally.

The main goal of the medical team is to reduce the inflammation down to a point where it is no longer a major impediment in steering a motorcycle. Treatment and rehabilitation of the finger are being used to allow Marquez to regain as much comfort and mobility as possible in his left.

Dr. Mir adds that luckily, MotoGP riders are not using the clutch too much when on the track. The clutch is needed during takeoff at the beginning of the race, but with seamless shifting, both shifting up and down the gearbox can be safely done without touching the clutch.

We'll be back with more news on both Repsol Honda riders ahead of this Sunday's race at Jerez.
