Put your stopwatches down you petrolheads - yes, Porsche’s works driver did lap the Nurburgring in a 911 GT3 RS, but it was for a commercial.
When we first heard that Mark Webber, who races LMP1 Porsches for a living, has taken to the Nurburgring in Zuffenhausen’s latest 911 track special, we were expecting to see a 911 GT3 RS stopwatch result.
However, while the Australian racing driver did lap the Nordschleife in the GT3 RS, as the photos below show, it was for a different reason. As you’ve noticed, Webber has a passenger who’s threatening him with a... photo camera. At the same time, a video camera is attached to the windshield.
Therefore, you should expect to see the ex-Red Bull F1 driver and the 911 GT3 RS in a commercial soon. Spoiler alert: the roll cage will make a cameo appearance.
Porsche works driver ads aside, we can’t help but notice how aggressive Zuffenhausen’s marketing actions have become. In fact, just earlier today we wrote about a campaign that brings Porsche into the unconventional zone. We are talking about the 911 GT3 (no RS here) racing a fighter jet.
Since supercars battling it out with fighter planes have started becoming mainstream nowadays, the ad takes an... emotional twist.
Going even deeper into Porsche’s promotional activities, there’s a noticeable increase in the interest shown for drifting. By definition, Porsche are made for balance, they want to make the most out of the available grip.
Nevertheless, since people are crazy about powersliding these days, the Germans deliver the expected sideways thrills - from commercials to driving tuition programs, you can clearly see Porsches playing the slip angle game.
