Since he is currently competing in the FIA World Endurance Championship as a Porsche works driver in LMP1, touring the company’s celebrity ambassador around town is more than natural. Mark Webber drove Maria Sharapova to practice at Rod Laver Arena in preparations for the 2015 Australian Open during a Porsche photo call, in Melbourne.
The two were seen driving in Porsche’s 911 Targa 4S and there’s really not much about it. After all, we already know the Stuttgart-based luxury car maker just unveiled their new GTS at the Detroit International Auto Show. Like we previously mentioned, the 911 Targa is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year and to honor that, the company is launching the GTS, on display for the first time at the Washington Boulevard show.

Not that we don’t find the 4S already delightful, but what’s this whole deal about getting famous people to pose with an older model (and to be sure there’s no confusion, we mean a car model). Sure, we all know about embedded marketing as being auto maker’s favorite “weapon of choice”. Using famous artists and sportsmen to advertise cars is already old-school.

After all, it’s not the first time we see the World’s 2nd best tennis player being chauffeured by Mark Webber in one of Porsche’s superb vehicles. Take last April, when Sharapova and the former F1 driver got to sample the 918 Spyder. Then, a couple of months later the two were seen driving around in the same car, only this time they were attending a Pre-Wimbledon Party.

These two were seen that often together, some people in the auto industry were even considering that they are dating. We don’t know much about that, but we do know both are top brand promoters so Porsche probably thought using their fame at once should work even better. But still, why not the GTS instead?
