Nothing seems capable of slowing down Marco Wittmann this season, the young BMW DTM driver posting another impressive qualifying run. This time, the action took place on the Green Hell and 2013’s ‘Rookie of the year’ claimed nothing less than the first position.
Furthermore, he managed that despite having to carry 10 extra kilograms in his car due to the new DTM regulations. With a time of 1:22.780 minutes he was just 0.145 seconds faster than Audi’s Edoardo Mortara and he therefore snatched the first place for tomorrow’s race. This is also the 43rd time BMW has a pole position in the German competition and the third consecutive time this happens since the brand returned in 2012.
Unfortunately no other BMW driver managed to qualify in the third qualifying round, with Maxime Martin being the second best ranked driver out of the remaining 7, coming in 12th. Augusto Farfus finished 14th, Timo Glock came in 16th followed by Bruno Spengler and Martin Tomczyk.
Antonio Felix da Costa and Joey Hand (that has been struggling with a stomach flu) will be starting from the 19th and 20th positions tomorrow.
“We once again witnessed a sensational qualifying from Marco Wittmann. This is his third pole position of the season – and with maximum weight on board. You cannot fail to be impressed by Marco’s performances at the moment. We are obviously not happy with the rest of the results,” said Jens Marquardt, BMW Motorsport Director.
“That really was a very good qualifying – and it went far better than I could ever have expected with ten kilograms of ballast on board. My car was perfect in the second qualifying session, and was also great to drive in Q3. To start from pole here at the Nürburgring, at BMW Team RMG’s home race, is fantastic,” said Marco.
