Marco Wittmann Claims Fourth Win this Season on the Ring

Starting off from pole position, Marco Wittmann didn’t want to let the number one spot go throughout the race this weekend on the Nurburgring. Therefore, with a lot of hard work and a masterfully crafted strategy, the BMW Team RMG driver managed to win his fourth race of the season.

“I had a very good start, led going into turn one, and was able to pull away quickly. My pit stop was also quick and flawless, and that allowed me to stay out in front. The team did a fantastic job,” said Marco after the race, visibly enthusiastic.

His win brings BMW Team RMG its fifth top spot on the podium this season but it’s also very important in the battle that is going down in the Drivers’ Championship. Over there, Marco is leading by 64 points and the title seems to be getting closer every day.

This was the 63rd victory for BMW in the DTM and the 15th since returning to the series back in 2012. The 24-year-old driver also managed to post the fastest lap time of the race at 1:23.175 minutes. Right now, Team RMG won 5 of the 7 races of the season and nothing seems capable of stopping them from winning the Teams’ Competition. Maxime Martin also helped out in this regard, finishing seventh and, therefore, in the points as well. In the Manufacturers’ Competition, BMW is leading at the moment with 302 points.

Martin Tomczyk also managed to finish in the points, claiming the eight position with his BMW M Performance Parts M4. Unfortunately, Bruno Spengler, Antonio Felix da Costa and Joey Hand didn’t manage to make it in the top 10 and came in on 12th, 13th and 14th. It could’ve been worse, though, as Timo Glock learned.

He had an early collision with Gary Paffett that sent him well down the field, with no hopes for any points throughout the race, finishing 17th. Augusto Farfus, on the other hand, also had a collision (with Jamie Green from Audi) but in his case, he had to retire after 36 laps.

“After the disappointing qualifying result on Saturday, a couple of our other drivers also picked up points. We witnessed fantastic, exciting fightbacks from Maxime Martin and Martin Tomczyk. Although it is looking very good for Marco in the Drivers’ Championship, we will remain fully focussed,” said Jens Marquardt after the race.

The next event in the 2014 DTM Championship will take place on the Lausitzring, Germany, on September 14.
