The international motorsport press is saddened today, as MotoGP rider has left the world at the early age of 24, after receiving serious injuries due to a crash at the Sepang MotoGP race in Malaysia.
Valentino Rossi described him as a younger brother, being obviously saddened by the loss that the racing world has suffered.
Ironically enough, Sepang was also where Simoncelli suffered two preseason testing crashes last year, and the second of these even managed to crack his helmet. However, this Sunday’s crash was much serious as the injuries he sustained caused him his life. It was also here that he secured his overall victory in the 2008 250cc World Championship almost three years ago to the day.
At the Malaysia race, the Italian rider was involved in a crash with Colin Edwards and Valentino Rossi. He was comfortably in forth position overall when his bike slid in a corner into the path of the two. Edwards was also seriously injured, having dislocated his shoulder, But it was Simoncelli that took the heavies blow, his helmet having fallen off during the accident.
The rider was immediately taken by the ambulance to the medical center, but after 45 minutes of resuscitation maneuvers, he was declared dead.
