Hours ago we got wind that Marc Marquez was contemplating following into the steps of the great Freddie Spencer and thinking about taking the start in both the Moto2 and MotoGP races in the last round of the 2014 championship, at Valencia.
After having won all the 9 races in the first half of the season, Marquez said that he could indeed think about such a feat, provided that the 2014 title is decided before the last round of the championship.
However, Dorna Sports CEO and MotoGP boss Carmelo Ezpeleta said that there will be no modifications to the calendar and denied having Marquez in the Moto2 and MotoGP races in Valencia. “The fact that Marquez can race in two categories is very difficult, even though it is not impossible,” he said. “Spencer was a 500cc and a 250cc champion in the same year, but that was another era. Marquez is winning, but this doesn’t come easy. His victories are on the edge, and his rivals are most valiant.“
While MM93 spoke about potentially racing in the Moto2 only if his MotoGP title would already be secure before the last round, it sounds reasonable that the same happened in the intermediate class, as well. In case the 2014 Moto2 title is decided in the Valencia race, adding Marquez for such a one-off feat would simply destroy any trace of strategic plans the teams made, and could hamper their efforts.
Now, Mr. Ezpeleta and the fellows running the MotoGP have not always made exactly the best decisions, but this time, there is much wisdom in his position. As fun as it would be for Marquez and maybe for the audience, the year-long efforts of the Moto2 teams come first. This shows respect for their investments and sacrifices, appreciation for their riders’ skills and allows the class to end the season in a predictable way.
On the other hand, in case Marquez feels like becoming the second Freddie Spencer, maybe he could convince his team and Dorna to allow him a double entry in 2015. Why not?
