Marc Marquez Receives the Laureus World Breakthrough of the Year Award

Reigning MotoGP champion and winner of the first round of the 2014 season Marc Marquez received the Laureus World Breakthrough of the Year Award, in a ceremony held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The Spaniard received the prize as recognition of his amazing sport talent, after becoming the world’s youngest-ever rider to win a World MotoGP title last year. During the 2013 championship, Marquez also broke multiple records, and this also helped him win the judges’ votes for the Laureus awards. At 20 years and 63 days of age, Maquez become the youngest ever rider to win a premier class race, while at the end of the season, 20 years and 266 days-old, he became the first rookie to win a championship, since Kenny Roberts’ victory in 1978.

Motorcycling legends Giacomo Agostini and Mick Doohan have presented Marc Marquez with the Laureus trophy on the Kuala Lumpur stage yesterday, during the event which was broadcast around the planet. , “I want to thank the Laureus Academy for giving me this prize. It’s a special experience for me to be here, at just 20 years of age, with so many sporting legends. This is one of the most important awards I have ever won. I also want to thank everyone who has helped me in my career and to win the title,” Marquez declared.

This edition of the Laureus Awards also had Formula 1 star Sebastian Vettel (Laureus World Sportsman of the Year), swimmer Missy Franklin (Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year), football team Bayern Munich (Laureus World Team of the Year) and tennisman Rafael Nadal (Laureus World Comeback of the Year) among the winners.

Widely regarded as the “Oscar of sports” the Laureus Awards comprise several other categories, including one for disabled sportsmen and sportwomen. In fact, this year’s Laureus prize for persons with a Disability went to French skier Marie Bochet.
