Marc Gene Close to Make F1 Return with Campos

Marc Gene's days of testing in Formula One may be over as of 2010. But that's not necessarily bad news for the 35-year old Spaniard. According to several media reports in Spain, it seems the fresh 24 Hours of Le Mans winner is in pole position to securing a driving spot with new 2010 entrants Campos Grand Prix for the upcoming season.

Being that Adrian Campos – former grand prix driver with Minardi – will begin his maiden Formula One campaign as team owner in 2010, he'll certainly need an experienced driver to help him set up a competitive car for the upcoming season. Gene seems to fit the profile very well, as McLaren's test driver Pedro de la Rosa.

Although no official statement has been made by the team officials, Spanish sports newspaper AS revealed that 4 Spansh drivers are currently on Campos' list for next year. Aside from the two aforementioned drivers, the 39-year old owner is also considering GP2 youngsters Javi Villa and Roldan Rodriguez (who also used to test for F1 outfit Force India).

I will speak with them. I will try to support Spanish drivers, but that does not mean that anyone is going to drive for us just because he is Spanish,” was the sole confirmation coming from team owner Adrian Campos.

Also hoping for a Campos Grand Prix return will be reigning GP2 Series champion Giorgio Pantano. The Italian became the only GP2 winner not to make the step to Formula One last year, but is now hopeful that the team for which he drove to GP2 glory will consider him for next season's lineup.

In other related news, USF1 co-owners Peter Windsor and Ken Anderson also announced they will make their 2010 lineup public in a matter of weeks, with both drivers expected to be based in the USA (or North America).
