Crashing an expensive, beautiful car is bad as it is, but crashing one that’s not even yours to begin with is even worse. Especially if you borrowed it from a friend who trusted you to do right by it.
It happened to a man from China, named Shi. He borrowed a white 2016 Maserati Ghibli from his best friend so he could go for a ride, and ended up totaling it, The Sun reports. It also has video of the stupid, one-vehicle crash.
CCTV cameras caught Shi doing 111mph on the empty motorway near the city of Jiaxing, China, where the speed limit was of 75mph. He was clearly trying to see what the car could do, taking advantage of the empty road. It didn’t go as planned: shortly after he comes into the frame, he loses control of the car and it veers to the right, and then smashes into the barrier.
“Shi admitted to investigators that he had been speeding at the time of the crash, going at up to 111mph in a 75mph zone,” the publication says. “It has since been revealed that the owner of the car paid over £112,651 for the Maserati after tax.”
At today’s exchange rate, that would be almost $130,000. Needless to say, Shi is in a world of trouble with his mate – if he can call him that after what he did to his prized car.
“The car’s insurer is not expected to pay out in full due to the unlawful cause of the accident, the police said,” the report adds. As was to be expected: after all, the crash was the driver’s fault as he violated the speed limitations.
The good news is that neither Shi the driver nor his passenger was hurt in the accident. No one else was involved in the crash.
