Illegally collecting insurance money is an alluring plan for some, even if this means getting rid of the beloved motorcycle. However, these plans ofter backfire in the worse way possible. Chad E. Dejongh, a biker in Beaver, Michigan, thought he could really use the insurance money for his Harley-Davidson, so he buried it and reported it stolen in October 2009.
Maybe he would have gotten away with this if it wasn't for his soon-to-be ex-wife Laurie, who in September 2011 contacted the police and declared she witnessed her husband planning the scam and burying the motorcycle on a relative's property.
She also told the investigators that her husband threatened to kill her if she told about all this to anyone. And to make things even more frightening, he promised to bury her next to the Harley, which he then believed nobody was to find out, in a 5 feet hole.
With a search warrant at hand, the investigators dug in the indicated area, but found only several motorcycle parts, however enough for a bigger investigation to be started. Initially denying the allegations, Dejongh finally admitted his guilt, in fear of being also charged with false pretenses between $20,000 and $50,000, a 15-year felony, after negotiations with the prosecutors.
Chad E. Dejongh was sentenced to paying $25,355.16 (€19,058) and 182 days in jail, with credit for two days served. The judge deferred an additional 93 days and ordered Dejongh to serve three years of probation upon release. Too bad for the Harley...
