A 40-year-old man from Turlock, California, spent an hour covered in cow feces in a bid to avoid the police after stealing a car. He eventually gave himself up because he was too cold.
The Modesto Bee reports that the Stanislaus County Auto Theft Task Force (StanCATT) spotted a stolen Kia Optima with stolen plates and initiated a traffic stop. Bryan Woolever, the 40-year-old man mentioned above, was driving and he was initially cooperating with the officers.
Then, in the middle of the traffic stop, he just sped away. Police say he reached speeds of 110 mph, so the officers eventually decided engaging in a chase at this speed would be too dangerous. They alerted the helicopter unit, which tracked the suspect and kept an eye on him until he crashed farther down the road.
The crash happened outside a dairy farm, and Woolever proceeded to make his escape on foot. He got inside one of the cattle pens and would spend the next hour surrounded by about 100 cattle and covered in their excrement.
Police closed in on Woolever, with the help of a K9 unit, the same media outlet reports. “They repeatedly ordered the suspect to surrender, but he remained hunkered down within the cows for an hour,” the report says. “The temperature was in the 40s and the suspect was wet, so at about 10:30 p.m. he announced that he was cold and walked out of the pen.”
Woolever was arrested and charged with auto theft, evading, and possession of a stolen vehicle, all of them felonies. When they ran him through the system, the police discovered he had 6 outstanding warrants on drug-related offenses, so it looks like he’s going away for some time, if he’s found guilty on the new charges brought against him. But hey, at least he won’t be cold, wet and stinky anymore.
