Another violent attack has taken place in China, in a busy square in the city of Hengdong in central Hunan province, when a driver rammed his car into the crowd.
According to reports from the local media cited by AsiaOne, authorities have confirmed 9 fatalities and 46 injured people, as of the time of writing. They also say that the driver is in their custody and that the formal investigation is still underway.
Of those injured, 3 are in critical condition at the hospital. The attack occurred at 7:35 pm local time, with footage and photos from the scene, posted to social media and since deleted, showing a red SUV with a smashed bumper, after presumably having plowed into the crowd. Police have not confirmed if that was really the vehicle used in the attack.
The driver has been identified as Yang, a 54-year-old man with a history of arrests on various crimes and infractions. No reason for his most recent (and most violent) attack has been offered as of press time.
Since 1992, Yang has been mostly in and out of jail, serving time for anything from affray and defiance, to drug dealing, causing intentional harm and starting fires. He is a junior high graduate but is currently unemployed.
Starting with 1992, he seems to have had a hard time staying on the right side of the law. His most recent arrests and jail stints include an August 2009 conviction on extortion and a January 2018 conviction for an act of defiance and affray. He was a free man between May 2014 and the January arrest.
All footage and photographic evidence from the scene of the attack has been pulled from social media by the state. Police are expected to release more details once the current investigation concludes.
