File this under “stupid stuff you do when you’re high:” one 28-year-old man from Mississippi is currently in police custody, after deliberately driving his pickup truck into the local courthouse and causing considerable damage to the building.
The reason he did something so reckless and potentially dangerous is mind-blowing: he said he needed to alert the police to the fact that his drug paraphernalia was missing, the Sun Herald reports. Why he couldn’t have picked the phone to dial 911 is anyone’s guess at this point.

The police have released surveillance video of the incident, which occurred over the weekend, in the early hours when no one was around. No one was hurt. You can see it at the bottom of the page as well. A red Toyota Tacoma is seen smashing into the side of the Harrison County courthouse, and panels of glass rain down on the hood of the car.

After some difficulty, the driver emerges on the passenger side, and steps back to estimate the damage. He doesn’t seem injured and he appears very calm, so police had no reason to doubt him when he told them he’d done it on purpose. They didn’t say if they had any suspects for his stolen drug paraphernalia.

Cavalier was arrested and charged with “first-offense DUI and felony malicious mischief,” the publication reports. The latter charge is a felony because it is estimated that the damage caused to the building exceeds $1,000. For the time being, he remains in jail on a $25,000 bond.

Not surprisingly, Cavalier has a checkered past, including charges for resisting arrest, domestic violence and malicious mischief. Just last year, he was hit with another count of domestic violence and malicious mischief, the same publication reports.

As of the time of writing, it is unknown if Cavalier has legal representation.
