Man Crushed by Tractor Manages to Call For Help

Stupid accidents happen all the time from various reasons and unfortunately they can have unpleasant consequences for the victims.

A recent article in The Daily Telegraph brings to the general attention a story less common. It appears that a 52-year-old man was critically injured after a tractor rolled him over at a property in Queensland, Australia. Fortunately for him, he remained conscious and managed to use his mobile phone and call for help.

A spokeswoman for the RACQ Careflight helicopter reported the man had suffered serious crush injuries just after midday on Monday in the accident on a property at Curra, near Gympie in the state's south-east. He was immediately taken to a Brisbane hospital where his condition was stabilized.

The spokeswoman added the tractor had rolled on the man but he had managed to contact his friends on his mobile phone. Although they rushed immediately to the scene, they couldn't free their friend. Apparently,  despite securing ropes around the tractor and using another vehicle to tow it off the victim, they were unable to move the tractor.

That's the moment when the Fire and Rescue Service came into action. In spite of their experience and preparation, the task was difficult for the crew as well and they spent about an hour working to free the man after they arrived.

Afterwards, Dr Ben Walters from RACQ Care Flight Rescue spent about 30 minutes stabilizing the man before the Careflight helicopter could carry him to Royal Brisbane hospital in a critical condition.

"He has some usual crash injuries, chest and abdominal injuries and a broken shoulder," Dr Walters said adding that "The patient was conscious throughout the incident, however, he did have some respiratory problems."

Taken into consideration the ordeal he has been through, the 52-year-old man can consider him extremely lucky he survived.
